2011 Line Up
Sarah Aley
Twenty-seven-year-old all-round cricketer, Sarah Aley (nickname “Mittsy”), is now one of only four players to have been involved in all six of the Lend Lease Breakers’ consecutive national titles, along with Lisa Sthalekar, Alex Blackwell and Leah Poulton. Last summer saw Aley lead the City side in the series against Country, and she was also captain of the Lend Lease Breakers for their round of matches against South Australia with the Australian players away.
During the off-season she spent some time coaching the Argentinian women’s team. Sarah’s club side is Bankstown Sports which is going for a fifth consecutive title this summer.
Hayley Bateup
Arguably Australia's fittest female athlete, Hayley is one of the toughest ironwomen on the competition circuit. The lifesaver is the only athlete (male or female) to win the most gruelling event on the circuit, the Coolangatta Gold, three times. Hayley featured in Channel 7's Gladiators as Nitro, the show's fastest competitor.
Andy Bichel
Andy Bichel played 19 Tests and 67 One Day Internationals for Australia between 1997 and 2004. A right arm fast-medium bowler and hard-hitting lower order batsmen, he starred in Australia’s undefeated campaign to win the 2003 World Cup. During the tournament he took 7-20 against England and twice figured in match-saving batting partnerships. The Queenslander was named Australian Domestic Player of the Year in 2005, and retired in 2009.
James Brayshaw
James is a former state cricketer and now Australian television and radio personality. Playing for both South Australia and Western Australia, he had a career spanning almost a decade. In that time he was a consistent batsman with a first-class batting average of 42.53. Brayshaw is the host of The Sunday AFL Footy Show.
Mark Callaghan
Mark “Cal” Callaghan was a founding member of rock band GANGgajang, which gained a huge following around Australia in the mid-1980s. Mark was general manager of Shock Music Publishing, and is still heavily involved in the music industry through performing and publishing in his current role with Music Sales. Mark, who lives in the Southern Highlands, loves cricket and was part of the first two SSD matches.
Stuart Clark
One of the country's international cricket favourites, Stuart has earnt the nickname 'Sarfraz' in reference to the similarities of his bowling style and that of Sarfraz Nawaz. He was a right-arm fast-medium bowler for Australian and the NSW Blues and ended the 2006-07 Ashes series with the most wickets and best strike rate of all bowlers, surpassing even cricket legends Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.
Martin Crowe
Crowe represented New Zealand from the early 1980s and played 77 Test matches and 143 One Day Internationals. His career was cut-short following a serious knee injury in the mid 1990s, but he is considered one of New Zealand’s finest cricketers of any era.
Jim Dymock
Former rugby league international Dymock played for the Western Suburbs Magpies, Canterbury Bulldogs, Parramatta Eels and the London Broncos. In 1995 Dymock won the Clive Churchill Medal for man-of-the-match in the Bulldogs grand final win over Manly. He is now head coach of the Bulldogs.
Herschelle Gibbs
South African born Gibbs is one of only three batsmen in One Day International history to score hundreds in three consecutive innings. Gibbs became the first player to hit six sixes in one over in One Day International Cricket, doing so against the Netherlands in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. He has also partnered Adam Gilchrist at the top of the order for the Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League.
Adam Gilchrist
When Adam Gilchrist retired from international cricket early in 2008, he was widely regarded as the finest wicket-keeper batsman to have ever played the game. Adam, who is now an Ambassador for the University of Wollongong, is an aggressive left-handed batsman and record-breaking wicket-keeper. He holds the world record for the most dismissals by a wicket keeper in One Day International cricket (472) and the most by an Australian in Test cricket (416). His strike rate is among the highest in the history of both ODI and Test cricket and he is the only player to have hit 100 sixes in Test cricket. Adam holds the record of scoring at least 50 runs in successive World Cup finals (in 1999, 2003 and 2007) and is one of only three players to have won three titles. Adam scored a spectacular century to spearhead Australia’s victory in the 2007 World Cup final.
Prashant Kumar Giri
Prashant was the captain of NRE Coal Cutter’s 2010-11 cricket team and the side’s highest scorer. Prashant is a skilled all-rounder and was the Northern Suburb social Cricket Competition’s best and fairest player. Prashant will open the innings with Gilly XI after NRE sucessfully bid for the prize at last year's Stumping Serious Diseases gala dinner.
Alyssa Healy
Alyssa Healy continued a family tradition when she made her international debut for Australia in 2010. The right-handed batter and wicketkeeper is the niece of former Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy and the daughter of Greg Healy, who was part of the Queensland squad. Alyssa made her debut for NSW in 2007.
Wayne Holdsworth
Wayne ‘Cracker’ Holdsworth was the mainstay of the NSW attack in the early 1990s. His best season was 1992/93 when he took 53 first class wickets, including a career-best 7/41 to bowl NSW to victory in the Sheffield Shield final against Queensland. That effort earned him a place in the Australian squad for the 1993 Ashes tour to England.
Adam Hollioake
Australian-born all-rounder Adam Hollioake captained England in 14 of his 35 One Day Internationals between 1996 and 1999. He also played four Test matches for England, and starred in the English County Championship. Adam captained Surrey from 1997 until 2003, and led them to victory in the English County Championship in 1999, 2000 and 2002. He was honoured as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2003.
Carl Hooper
Carl Hooper represented the West Indian cricket team for 21 years as a player and a captain. Hooper holds the accolade of being the first cricketer in the world to have scored 5000 runs, taken 100 wickets, held 100 catches and received 100 caps in both One Day Internationals and Tests. Carl is currently club coach for the Woodville District cricket club.
Nikki Hudson
Nikki is an Australian hockey sensation and the first woman to play 300 games for the country. The captain of the Hockeyroos until her retirement in 2009, she led the team to their gold medal win at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and has since appeared as a hockey commentator on channels OneHD and TEN.
Merv Hughes
Merv Hughes, the legendary right arm fast bowler and crowd favourite of Australian cricket represented Australia between 1985 and 1994 in 53 Test matches and 33 One Day Internationals. Merv was also a useful lower-order batsman, scoring two half-centuries in Tests and over 1000 runs.
Darren Lehmann
A former Australian Test batsman, South Australian born Lehmann scored over 10,500 runs in 107 first-class appearances for the state, and was a part of the South Australian team that claimed the Sheffield Shield in 1995/96. After retiring from first class cricket in 2007, he was recently appointed coach of the Queensland Bulls.
Justin Melvey
Justin is an Australian born actor raised in Sydney. Justin's role in Home and Away as Harry Reynolds earned him a Logie Award for Most Popular New Talent on Australian television. He also appeared on the long running American show Days of Our Lives. Justin is involved in many charities including the Leukaemia Foundation.
Kurt Miller
University of Wollongong first grade cricket captain, Kurt Miller, is an all-rounder as a right arm medium pace bowler and top order batsman. He scored an unbeaten 96 in last season’s first grade final and has previously scored centuries for the University side. He has taken 20 plus wickets in a season as a change bowler.
Kurt is also renowned as an excellent cover fieldsman. Several years ago Kurt scooped the awards at the Jamberoo Annual Cricket Club presentation including ‘Cricketer of the Year’.
Steve Mortimer
Steve Mortimer is rugby league royalty – one of the most creative, and toughest, halfbacks to have played the game. In a stellar career for the Canterbury Bulldogs between 1976 and 1988, Steve played 272 first grade games including six grand finals. The Bulldogs won four of those grand finals, with Mortimer captaining the side to back-to-back premierships in 1984-85. He also played eight Tests for Australia and represented NSW 16 times. In February 2008, Mortimer was named by the NRL and ARL in the list of Australia's 100 Greatest Players (1908-2007).
Greg Page
Greg Page is a musician and actor, who is best known as the original lead vocalist and founding member of the children's band The Wiggles. He retired in 2006 due to ill health, and has since started his own foundation, the Greg Page Fund, to raise money and educate the public about orthostatic intolerance. Greg played in the first two SSD matches.
Wendell Sailor
Affectionately known as Big Dell, the dual code national started playing for the Brisbane Broncos in 1993 before switching to Rugby Union in 2001. Wendell went on to make his Wallabies debut in 2002 before an exciting comeback to League in 2007. After 16 years in professional sport, Wendell announced his retirement in 2009. He is now a regular panellist on FOX Sports and Channel 9.
Gus Worland
Gus Worland is a broadcaster and TV presenter who has lived the dream of every cricketing tragic. He turned his passion into a reality when he co-created (with his best mate Hugh Jackman) and starred in Foxtel’s "An Aussie Goes" series. He is currently the breakfast radio host on MMM Radio.
